What Is a Gable Roof? Styles, Types, and More

gambrel roof design

A gambrel roof, also known as a Dutch colonial roof, is characterized by two slopes on each side. This unique design maximizes attic space in homes and allows for a taller loft area in barns and sheds. The architectural gambrel roof design is very popular both in Europe and the USA, as it maximizes the space in the building. The reason behind it is because the roof bends at two angles as opposed to the traditional one angled-roof design, thereby giving you more square footage to utilize.

Pros and cons of gambrel roofs

This roof design is often referred to as a “Dutch roof” and is a popular design style for barns and sheds. Some view this roof design as modest, however, there is no denying its ability to survive several thousands of years of home styles. While the original gambrels provided more living spaces on a third story, modern versions are typically more popular due to their visual interest. However, these roofs can be customized to the individual desires of the builder or homeowner.

The iconic gabled roof retained its charm during the revival of Cape Cod houses built between the 1930s and ’50s. While modern versions are more expansive, incorporating second stories and dormers, the gabled roof remains a defining feature, connecting past and present. Gambrel roofs can be made with a variety of materials that depend on several factors, including the climate zone of the building, the cost of the materials, and the desired aesthetic look.

In 1936, during the Great Depression, Frank Lloyd Wright developed a simplified version of Prairie architecture called Usonian. Wright believed these stripped-down houses represented the democratic ideals of the United States. Shown here is the Mission Revival style Lennox House on the campus of Colorado College.

The World's Best Roofing. Now Even More Affordable.

Gambrel roofs are becoming increasingly popular in residential and commercial construction projects due to their numerous benefits. One important advantage of a gambrel roof is that it provides more space and greater volume than other types of roofs, including mansard roofs. This extra room is one of the primary reasons why gambrel roofs are so popular in barn construction. A gambrel roof is a type of roof characterized by two sides, each of which has two different slopes. The upper slope is positioned at a shallow angle, while the lower slope is much steeper.

Gambrel roof vs. gable roof

Combining a gambrel style with a gable style creates a distinctive roof that adds variety to the outside appearance of the home as well as the layout internally. The oldest surviving house with a gambrel roof was built in 1677 and is at Harvard University. The term gambrel is a Norman English word with a variety of historical spellings. It allows for a shorter roof and creates lots of space for the top floor, whether for an attic or additional living space. So, we know what a gambrel roof looks like, but what exactly makes a gambrel roof?

gambrel roof design

Architects often build wall-supported gambrels where the roof does not hang over any of the walls. Wall-support gambrels allow homeowners to save on materials and labor that would otherwise go towards creating eaves. On each side of a gambrel, the roof starts from the ridge board at a low slope. Proper installation of roof flashing is important to prevent water penetration and protect vulnerable areas like roof edges, valleys, chimneys, and skylights. Choosing the suitable flashing material, understanding its purpose, and employing correct installation techniques are crucial for a watertight and durable roof structure.

Check the pros and cons to determine if a gambrel roof is right for you. Here are some answers to the frequently asked questions about gambrel roofs. Once dry, check all measurements to ensure they are tight and accurate before moving on to the final step. The trusses need to be measured equally to fit the size of the desired roof. The size of the roof determines how many trusses are needed to construct the gambrel roof.

The increased intricacy increases construction time and cost, of course, making it more rare. A roof deck can be made of different materials, such as metal or wood. The first step in the creation of a gambrel roof is the production of trusses.

Assembling the Rafters

Here are some examples of how this roof design can be utilized in different settings. If properly constructed and maintained, gambrel roofs will last decades. Like on all roofs, gambrel roof covering materials will degrade over time due to exposure and normal wear. Gambrel roofs on residential structures are typically constructed with wood. This style of gambrel roof is nearly identical, but there are four sloped sides instead of two.

Thomas Jefferson used the octagonal shape for his summer home, and many Adam and Federal-style homes included octagonal rooms. Renaissance (French for "rebirth") refers to the artistic, architectural, and literary movement in Europe between the 14th and 16th centuries. The Renaissance Revival style is based on the architecture of 16th-century Renaissance Italy and France, with additional elements borrowed from Ancient Greek and Roman architecture.

A Classic Gambrel Barn Roof

Available in brown, black, and several clay variations – all colored throughout. Accessory pieces include top ridge, hip trim, rakes, eave starters and ridge closures. The roof’s steep slope creates more living space inside the attic and allows you to add dormer windows and balconies to bring in more natural light. A Mansard roof adds plenty of curb appeal in addition to more usable living space.

This means that the builder will construct a series of individual trusses, all with identical measurements. These trusses can be achieved by using wooden two by four boards that are either assembled on the ground or another flat surface. In order to attain a proper analysis and decide if this type of roof is the best choice for you, we must also examine the disadvantages of gambrel roofs. The gambrel roof style is very common across Georgia, Maine, and even more so in Coastal regions across the country.

Era of popularity

gambrel roof design

From the initial planning stages to the finishing touches, we will cover all the essential steps to help you successfully build a gambrel roof. Gambrel roofs have been used since the 17th century, when Dutch settlers brought this classic style to America. This proved to be a great benefit to farmers while storing their crops and livestock, and it soon become popularized across America. When constructing a gambrel roof, there are several different types of materials that can be used. Asphalt shingles are the most widely used due to their affordability, ease of installation, and durability.

Take precise measurements and double-check the dimensions to avoid any errors or miscalculations during the construction process. Before beginning the construction of a gambrel roof, it is important to properly prepare the construction area. This involves clearing the site, marking the boundaries, and ensuring proper drainage to create a solid foundation for the roof structure. Gain expert insight and step-by-step instructions to create a sturdy and visually appealing structure.

Gambrel Truss FAQ

The design has become a classic feature of American architecture and continues to be used by architects and builders across the country. With its unique shape and practical benefits, it’s no wonder that gambrel roofs have stood the test of time. When it comes to roofing and architectural design, there are all kinds of roofs to choose from, each with its own unique design and features. Among the most popular types are the gambrel, gable, and mansard roofs, which are often used in residential and commercial construction projects. Popular amongst Dutch colonial homes and barns, Gambrel roofs provide an elegant yet simple look which adds character to any building’s appearance.

How Gambrel Roofs Stack Up Against Other Roofing Styles In Terms Of Energy Efficiency

When we describe a house as modern, we are saying that the design is not based primarily on history or traditions. In contrast, a Neoeclectic or Neotraditional home incorporates decorative details borrowed from the past. A Postmodern home also borrows details from the past, often exaggerating or distorting the details. On the other hand, the sloped A-frame roof creates a triangular "dead space" at the interior base of the walls on each floor. A-frame houses have limited living space and are usually built as vacation cottages for the mountains or beach.

With tall mansard roofs and wrought iron cresting, Second Empire homes are inspired by the opulent architecture of France during the reign of Napoleon III. The European style began in New England but eventually made its way to the American West. Built-in 1740, the Dutch Colonial Home shown here has a gambrel roof and a salt-box shaped lean-to addition. Later Dutch-style buildings became known for their elaborately shaped gables, dormers, and parapets. The gambrel roof may look like it conceals a complicated architectural design, but in truth, it does not.

Whether you’re considering a new build or looking to renovate, a gambrel-style roof is a worthwhile option to explore. With its ability to maximize space, accommodate a wide range of materials, and provide excellent drainage, it could be just the architectural flourish your property needs. A gambrel roof can contribute to the quaint charm of a cottage-style home. Combined with wood and stone construction, the roof’s design can make your home feel like a timeless retreat. Some might not like the sound of a metal roof; however, another option is wood shakes.

Furthermore, they're even more complex than a gambrel roof to construct because of their more intricate framing system. At the same time, hip roofs are better suited for hurricane-prone areas. They lack the large, flat ends of gabled roofs that catch strong uplifting winds in a hurricane, and they’re also more structurally stable because they’re braced more symmetrically. While they have their disadvantages, hip roofs certainly have environmental benefits and aesthetic qualities that outweigh the negative.

– The first thing you need to do is to determine how many trusses your gambrel roof needs with reference to the building size that is to be constructed. Barns are perhaps one of the most common structures where gambrel roofs are used. The design allows for maximum utilization of space, making it an efficient choice for both old and new barns. For a gambrel roof, the lower incline is steeper than the upper slope. The design of these angles provides greater vertical space on the upper level of the structure.

A sophisticated tone of pure elegance designed to complement the intricate texture of Barrel Tile. The pristine white hue, reminiscent of freshly fallen snow, bestows a cool and timeless ambiance to any rooftop.. For example, asphalt shingles are heavier than metal and might not work well on the roof’s steep slope. These will also offer better weather resistance—an important consideration for a Mansard roof that could be prone to water pooling.

This is the vital part of waterproofing the roof before installing asphalt shingles or any other type of roof shingle you like. Gambrel roofs are designed to maximize space, their height is more than gable roofs, which allows you to add extra shelves to increase capacity. Gable roofs, on the other hand, have smaller cubic feet and can often become full quickly after you store your garden tools and bicycles. Our synthetic product’s extreme durability surpasses clay and concrete tile. Brava’s lightweight composite barrel tile is a desirable Spanish roof tile alternative that offers ease of installation and superior durability. Spanish tile roofing has been around for centuries and continues to be the preference of many homeowners today.

Why Sage Smudging?

If you’re the type of person who throws parties or has a lot of personalities come through their home (friends, family, employees, etc.), it would be wise to incorporate saging your house into your routine. Burning sage is a powerful ritual that Indigenous communities have been using to clear negative energy for thousands of years. If you're going to burn sage in your own home, office, or apartment, be sure to do so safely and with respect for the origins of this sacred practice. Pasqualini recommends researching how your sage is being handled and prepared. "If it will be used for your energy-clearing ritual, it's important for your smudge stick to be deliberately prepared and handled with care and thoughtfulness," she says.

Hopefully you feel great knowing you’ve welcomed renewed and positive energy into your space. Now get ready to create a beautiful life on this new blank slate. But one uncommon technique you may want to try is saging your new house to invite in your own personal positive energy.

Another way to change your home’s energy for the better is to waft it with smoke (the good kind!). Using smoke from the embers of ancient medicinal herbs to “clear a space” is called smudging, and the most popular plants to smudge with are sage and palo santo. Place the sage on the shell or bowl, and use the feather to waft the smoke throughout your house. Many people suggest paying special attention to doorways and mirrors. While you’re wafting, ask all the negative energy in your home to clear out of your home.

Most people understand the idea of a ‘vibe,’ and Knowles says that feeling or concept can be used to understand sage cleansing, even for people without deep spiritual beliefs. “The vibe is the energy being emitted from a person, place, or thing,” Knowles says. After sage cleansing, the vibe will likely feel different, even to people who are skeptical. “The belief is that the smoke will blow any negative energy away and also carry the blessings and prayers for a sacred home out into the universe,” Henes says.

Then, start in the furthest room from the front door and begin to walk around the room, reaching every corner, and into every other room of the home with the sage smoke, making your way towards the front door. ‘You may also want to burn sage if you’re going through a big life change to help give you an energetic lift, if you have experienced conflict lately or are craving a fresh start. It is worth noting that burning sage is also a cultural practice, and so it should be done with reverence to its history and with intention. "Lungs are a delicate organ, and any type of smoke can be drying and irritating to the mucosa."
